.: Maryland Women Sweep, Duke Gets First ACC Wins Since 1993
College Park, MD , November 5th, 2005
"It was absolutely a team effort today," said head coach Dan Colella. "It is so difficult to pick out a handful of individuals who did well because everyone really did an excellent job today. We had great swims from start to finish."
The men's team opened and closed the meet on a high note, earning their first relay wins this year in the opening 400 medley relay and the closing 400 freestyle relay. Freshman Nick Campisano swept the one and three-meter diving events as one of three individuals to claim individual event titles. Senior Andy Storm championed the 1000 freestyle and 200 breaststroke, and sophomore Matt Rinehart won the 500 freestyle.
The Terp women's team picked up eight win against the Hurricanes and Blue Devils. Freshman Yelena Skalinskaya (Almaty, Kazakhstan) led the women picking up wins in the 50-free (23.89) and the 100-free (51.86).
Other individual winners for the Terps included junior Sasha Malanina (Volgograd, Russia) in the 1000-free (10:10.85), sophomore Maya Finkler (Rishon-le-zion, Israel) in the 200-free (1:52.74), and junior Erica Suguiyama (Ijamsville, Md.) in the 200-fly (2:06.44). Senior Krisztina Kovacs remained undefeated in the 200-breast winning in a time of 2:17.64. The Terps also swept the relays, with the 400-medley relay team of Levavi, Kovacs, Sumrall and Skalinskaya winning in 3:51.52, and the 400-free relay team of Finkler, Laputka, Sumrall and Suguiyama winning in 3:32.10.
"The plan from the beginning of the season was that with every week of training we were just going to get better and better, and our team has really stuck to that plan," said Colella. "They have really been putting their noses to the grindstone, and I am just so proud of their effort and the way they competed today."
