The men’s swimming and diving team broke into the win column in a big way on Nov. 4 at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center as the Hoosiers moved to 3-2 on the season with three wins against Louisville, Southern Illinois and No. 25 Wisconsin. Senior Sergiy Fesenko and sophomore Todd Patrick led the Hoosiers with three titles each. Overall, the Hoosiers claimed 12 titles on the day. The women’s swimming and diving team moved its record to 3-2 on the season with two wins and a loss in the quadrangular meet on Nov. 4. against Louisville, Southern Illinois and No. 12 Wisconsin in the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington, Ind. Freshman Allison Kay and junior Annica Lofstedt led IU with two wins each.

From a team-scoring standpoint, IU defeated Southern Illinois (118-108), Louisville (144-78) and No. 25 Wisconsin (120-106), while Southern Illinois knocked off Louisville (133-91) and No. 25 Wisconsin (123-105). Lastly, No. 25 Wisconsin defeated Louisville (131-93). For the women, the Hoosiers knocked off Southern Illinois (121-105) and Louisville (114-112), while falling to No. 12 Wisconsin (149-77). Additionally, Wisconsin downed Southern Illinois (150-78) and Louisville (155-73). Meanwhile, Louisville defeated Southern Illinois (117-111).

In the opening event of the afternoon, the Wisconsin quartet of Susan Johnson, Amalia Sarnecki, Jenny Gelden and Sarah Hernandez claimed the 400-yard medley relay title in a B-cut time of 3:44.38. The Hoosier contingent of junior Leila Vaziri, freshman Sarah Stockwell, Kay and Lofstedt chimed in with second place in 3:45.73. That performance now stands as the seventh-fastest clocking in school history. Meanwhile, Wisconsin’s second team of junior Andrea Wiesner, freshman Yi Ting Siow, sophomore Katie Imhoff-Smith and sophomore Hannah McClurg closed out the top-three with a 3:51.19.

In the opening event of the afternoon, the Hoosier contingent of sophomore Ben Hesen, senior Kevin Swander, senior Thomas Clavier and junior Colin Russell captured first place with a 3:20.06 in the 400-yard medley relay, while another IU squad of freshman Nick Walkotten, senior Hank Baldwin, junior Scott Tanner and junior Paul Sigfusson finished third in 3:27.68. Meanwhile, the Louisville quartet of sophomore Andrei Teudean, freshman Vali Predia, junior Matt Maley and senior Jon Farnham split the difference with a second-place 3:25.33.

In the 1,650-yard freestyle, Wisconsin went one-two as freshman Jennifer Illescas won the event in a B-cut time of 16:50.68. Meanwhile, senior Rebecca Johansson finished second in 16:58.78. For the Hoosiers, senior Lauren Torpey clocked a 17:19.24 for third.

The Hoosiers continued to pile up the points in the 1,650-yard freestyle as sophomore Alex Brunfeldt claimed the title in 15:48.24, while classmate John Kevin Koehler took second in 15:55.39. Meanwhile, Wisconsin sophomore Taylor Mathis rounded out the top three with a 15:56.10.

In the 200-yard freestyle, Wisconsin senior Anna Trinidad touched first in 1:51.29, while teammate Emily Carpenter placed second in 1:51.85. Additionally, IU junior Clarissa Wentworth rounded out the top-three with a 1:52.08 time.

Fesenko continued his early season success by blowing away the rest of the field with a 1:38.69 in the 200-yard freestyle. Meanwhile, Southern Illinois freshman Ivan Zgomba took second in 1:40.01, while Wisconsin junior Tom Molzahn finished third in 1:40.71.

The Badgers continued to capture titles as Hernandez posted the top time with a 23.47. Vaziri came in second for the Hoosiers in 23.85, while Wisconsin sophomore Jackie Vavrek placed third in 24.04.

In the 50-yard freestyle, sophomore Southern Illinois claimed the title in 21.08, while junior Lee Houchin took second for IU in 21.17. Additionally, Southern Illinois junior Case Gasparovich placed third in 21.26.

In the 200-yard IM, Siow picked up the event title in 2:01.67 for the Badgers, while Louisville freshman Leslia Van Winkle placed second in 2:05.00. Additionally, Sarnecki closed out the top three for Wisconsin in 2:05.23. The top Hoosier finisher, senior Kristen Bradley, claimed fifth in 2:06.12.

In the 200-yard IM, Patrick snared the crown in 1:50.17, while Swander helped IU record a top-two sweep with a 1:51.79. Meanwhile, Louisville’s Predia finished in third, while freshman A.J. Miller notched a career-best in 1:56.55 for fifth place.

The Hoosiers dominated in the one-meter diving break as senior Lisa Silvestri captured the crown with a 287.30, while Southern Illinois freshman Jessica Leong took second with a 268.95. Indiana then claimed the next three spots with junior Lindsay Weigle leading the way with 258.78 points for third. All three efforts cleared the zone-qualifying standard. In exhibition competition, sophomore Christina Loukas posted an outstanding 321.93 for what would have won the event. On the men's side the Hoosiers went one-two in the one-meter diving break as sophomore Taylor Roberts claimed the title with a 312.48 tally, while junior Brian Mariano finish second with a 302.28.

In the 100-yard freestyle, Lofstedt broke the Badger streak of top finishes with a B-cut time of 50.83. Meanwhile, Wisconsin’s Hernandez placed second in 51.06, while Louisville’s VanWinkle took third in 52.43.

In the 200-yard butterfly, Fesenko’s remarkable season continued with another title to hoist on his trophy way with a 1:50.10 for the Hoosiers. Southern Illinois sophomore Antonio Santoro placed second in 1:50.97, while Wisconsin freshman Scott Rice finished in third in 1:51.15. Notably, freshman Keith Dawley posted a career-best time of 2:01.00.

In the 100-yard freestyle, the Hoosiers swept the top two as Patrick recorded a career-best 44.80 for first. That performance also tied Patrick for 12th in school history in the event. Meanwhile junior Lee Houchin finished second in 45.88, while Wisconsin freshman Michael Desautels claimed third in 46.48.

The Badgers countered with another crown as Trinidad finished first in the 200-yard backstroke with a 2:00.68, while teammate Johnson came in second just behind in 2:00.69. Additionally, Wisconsin’s Wiesner clinch a top-three sweep for IU in 2:04.32. For the Hoosiers, Vaziri wound up in fourth with a 2:05.80.

In the 200-yard backstroke, Hesen tied with Southern Illinois sophomore Gareth McGee for first with matching 1:49.38 times. Fellow Saluki freshman Alexandre Marrucho closed out the top three with a 1:52.73.

In the 500-yard freestyle, Illescas pocketed the title with a B-cut time of 4:53.41, while Wisconsin senior Emily Carpenter knocked out a top-two sweep for the Badgers with a 4:59.02 clocking. Bradley rounded out the top three for IU with a 5:00.89 time. The Hoosier men went one-three when Russell registered a 4:32.34 for first place, while Brunfeldt placed third in 4:37.58. Wisconsin’s Molzahn split up the Hoosiers with a second-place 4:35.21.

In the three-meter break, the Hoosiers notched a one-two effort when senior Jesse Rappaport recorded a 309.85 to win the event, while Mariano took second with a 303.80. The Hoosiers posted another amazing performance on the three-meter as Indiana went one-two in the event. Senior Heather Chapman won the event with a 292.45 total, while Weigle placed second with a 277.05. Both scores eclipsed the zone-qualifying standard.

In the 200-yard breaststroke, Wisconsin’s Siow touched in an A-cut time of 2:13.00, while teammate Sarnecki finished second in 2:17.17. Southern Illinois junior Nora Bunford rounded out the top three with a 2:22.05. For the Hoosiers, freshman Abby Cooper posted a career-best 2:22.37 for fourth, while classmate Mary Elizabeth Miller touched in a personal-low 2:24.88 for ninth. Additionally, freshman Abbey Mitchell recorded a career-low 2:25.69 in the event as well. On the women's side, Swander continued the first-place parade for the Hoosiers with a 2:02.63 to place ahead of Louisville’s Predia (2:03.58). Baldwin finished third for IU in 2:06.98.

In the 400-yard freestyle relay, the Hoosier contingent of Lofstedt, Wentworth, Kay and Bradley finished first in 3:27.39, while Wisconsin came in second in 3:28.37 and Louisville took third in 3:33.12. On the men's side, Fesenko, Houchin, Patrick and Koehler finished first in 3:03.27, while Southern Illinois placed second in 3:04.86 and Wisconsin took third in 3:05.45.

Next up, the Hoosiers host the Indiana Invitational in the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington, Ind., from Nov. 18-20.
