.: Tennessee Sweeps Alabama 164-79

Tuscaloosa, AL , November 4th, 2005

The 19th-ranked Lady Volunteers and 12th ranked Volunteers of Tennessee throttled Alabama by identical scores of 164-79 ths afternoon. For the women, All-American Megan Tomes clocked a NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 200y IM to lead the way for UT. Overall, Lady Vol swimmers won 10 events in the rout.

"We tried to take our experience from the first three meets and use that as a strength," Lady Vol head swimming coach Matt Kredich said. "We showed a whole lot of patience in the ways we swam, and we put together a lot of good swims. It was pretty clear that the first three meets gave us some things to build off of, and we did that today. Betsy Brockman had her best meet of the year, and I think the 200y fly by her was the best swim of the day."

"I am very pleased with the performance from our group today," UT head coach John Trembley said. "Alabama is a top-10 team and had some tremendous swims.

"If our guys come together and keep working hard and make a few changes they can be a very, very good Tennessee team," Trembley added.

Senior captain Casey Dauw brought home two big wins for the Vols with wins in the 200 fly (1:48.92) and 200 I.M. (1:49.75).

Following Dauw in the 200 fly was sophomore Adam Farnham in second in 1:51.95. Junior Andrew Engle was in the third in 1:51.95.

Sophomore Michael Wolfe followed Dauw in the 200 I.M. in 1:51.67, and won the 200 back in 1:47.28. Fellow sophomore Andrew Van Meter finished second in the 200 back in 1:32.48.

Dauw also contributed to the winning 400 free relay. The relay won in 3:00.05. Freshman Barry Murphy was the lead man with senior Bryan Goldberg, Dauw and senior Tyler Gustafson following in order.

Venezuelan sophomore Octavio Alesi won the 50 free with a season-best 20.27. Murphy followed in second in 20.79.

Goldberg followed the meet-opening 400 medley relay effort with a win the 200 free in 1:40.31. Newcastle, England native Andrew Thirlwell trailed in second in 1:41.01.

In the diving well freshman Burkley Showe won both the 1- and 3-meter events for the third week in a row. Showe won the 1-meter with 351.75 and the 3-meter with 356.85.

Tennessee's quartet of Tomes, Tiffany Clay (Mason, Ohio), Jacque Fessel (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Laura Fehrman (St. Charles, Ill.) cruised to the win the 400 medley relay in a time of 3:47.80.

Freshman Sam Maccherola (Mount Airy, Md.) led the charge for the Orange and White by posting the fastest time on the season by any Lady Vol swimmer (10:13.62) to hold off Alabama's Hanna Miluska by .16 seconds in the 1000.

Christine Magnuson (Tinley Park, Ill.) continued the winning ways for the ladies from Rocky Top, taking the 200 free in 1:51.98.

The sprinters then hit the water for the 50y free. Gehring and Elizabeth Christy (Indianapolis, Ind.) went one-two, registering times of 24.32 and 24.38, respectively.

In the 200y IM, Tomes showed no rust from not having competed in the event all year long. UT's school record holder swam free and easy, leaving the opposition in her wake. The junior fashioned a time of 2:02.16, her third-fastest regular season clocking of her career in picking up the win. Tomes also won the 100 freestyle in 51.48.

"We had kind of a mixed bag today," diving coach Dave Parrington said. "I am very pleased with Vicky Linnell's consistency. She showed some of the things we have been working on. In general we had to compete under some disruptive circumstances due to a late format change which affected us to certain degree."

Fessel won the 200 back by more than six seconds with a 2:01.06.

Maccherola successfully completed the sweep of the distance events, recording a final readout of 5:01.12. Mathes took second in an impressive lifetime best 5:02.85, while Cain earned third. The one-two-three finish put the score at 125-63 in favor of the Lady Vols.

In the 200y breaststroke, All-American Clay remained perfect on the year. She stopped the clocked in 2:20.25.

The meet would conclude with a bang, as Lady Vol relays dominated the Crimson Tide quartets. UT went one-three in the final event of the day.
