.: North Carolina Women Stomp NC State, 201-99

November 30th, 2005

Meet Results

The Carolina women's swimming and diving team got Wednesday night's meet against NC State off to a quick start, recording the three fastest times in the night¹s first event, the 200-yard medley relay. From there, they refused to let up the pressure taking first place in each of the next six events and cruising to a 201-99 victory.

In what has become this season¹s recurring theme, the Tar Heels' stellar freshman class stole the spotlight. The school record holder in the 500-yard freestyle, Whitney Sprague won both the 200-yard freestyle and the 500. Sarah Scott recorded the second individual first place of her collegiate career by outswimming the 50-yard freestyle field in t 24.38. She then picked up first place number three five events later by winning the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 56.91. Not to be outdone, fellow freshman Hannah Mein won both the 200-yard breaststroke and 200-yard butterfly.

Carolina also had four other individual event winners on the night. Juniors Meagan Eickman and Marissa Nilon won the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard breaststroke, respectively. Senior captain Lizzy Bruce was the meet's top swimmer in the 200-yard individual medley. Freshman Nicole O¹Donnell continued the class of 2009¹s strong night with a victory in the 1000-yard freestyle.

The Tar Heels also took first in each of the two relays. Scott, extending her banner night, was a member of both first place teams. Freshman Aubrette Biegel also swam on both of the winning teams. The Schererville, Ind. native anchored both the 200-yard medley and freestyle relays.

For NC State, diver Molly Culbertson was the headliner. Culbertson swept the one- and three-meter diving competitions. She was also the only diver to crack the 300-point plateau on the night with a score of 325.65 on the three-meter board.
