The men (1-2, 1-1 BIG EAST) started out the meet with a pair of second place finishes. Their 200 medley relay narrowly fell to the Tigers, and sophomore Scott Thompson (Birmingham, MI) posted a 9:36.84 in the 1,000 freestyle. Junior Bobby Daplyn (Vineland, NJ) and freshman Steve Miller (Windham, NH) fought to change the tide by securing first (1:42.86) and second (1:43.53) in the 200 freestyle. In the 100 breaststroke, freshmen Andy Dilz (Cincinnati, OH) and Eric Lane (New Canaan, CT) continued the streak as they swam the top two times in the event, 58.83 and 59.36 respectively. Dilz went on to lead a sweep in the 200 breaststroke. His top time of 2:07.24 was followed closely by senior Jonathan Hupp’s (Mobile, AL) time of 2:07.47 and sophomore Steve Park’s (Northridge, CA) 2:08.52. Hupp later claimed second place in the 400 IM (4:05.13). In the 50 freestyle, sophomore Adam Papendick (Kinnelon, NJ) swam a speedy 21.54 to take first while Dilz took third in the event (21.69). Papendick continued his sprinting reign by winning the 100 freestyle with a lifetime best of 47.00. The men’s winning streak was put on hold until the last event in which Dilz, Daplyn, Papendick, and Miller pooled their strength to barely edge out the Tigers, ending the meet with one final victory. “I was really proud of my teammates for stepping up and beating people they weren’t expecting to beat”, said men’s team captain Jonathan Hupp, on the team’s performance.
The women’s (3-0, 2-0 BIG EAST) team started its successful conquest with a 200 medley relay victory by the team of senior Kelly Harrigan (Bristol, CT), senior Allie Dean (Buffalo, NY), sophomore Mindy Tang (Durham, NC) and sophomore Angelina Colavito (Las Vegas, NV). Junior Allyson Parent (Glens Falls, NY) continued the winning streak with 4:23.14 top time in the 400 IM. Freshman Laura Wright (Longmont, CO) took second in the event (4:26.00). Harrigan racked up two more individual wins: One in the 200 freestyle (1:50.04) and another in the 500 freestyle (4:54.42), which Parent placed second in (4:55.99). Another multiple event winner was freshman Madi Kennedy (Avon, CT) who led the Lady Knights’ sweep in the 100 backstroke followed by freshman Cat Whetstone (Beach Haven, NJ) and junior Laura Fabiano (West Orange, NJ). Kennedy’s winning time of 23.23 in the 50 freestyle broke both the school and pool records, as her victory in the 100 freestyle (50.58) also was a new school record.
The Lady Knights were all around victorious as Dean won the 100 breaststroke (1:04.74) as well as the 200 breaststroke (2:18.04). In the 200 backstroke, junior Annie Goldstein (Barrington, RI) swam to a victorious 2:05.43 followed by Whetstone’s second place 2:06.35. Junior Sarah Bicknell (Bettendorf, IA) took top honors in the 200 butterfly (2:01.81) while Parent finished second (2:07.16). The 100 butterfly also went to Bicknell (56.37), who finished just ahead of freshman Linda Tate (Lantana, FL). In the 200 IM, Wright prevailed over the competition with a 2:05.35 while Dean finished at a close second (2:06.57). The Lady Knights ended the meet by setting a new pool record in the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Kennedy, Colavito, junior Sarah Gault (Chateauguay. Quebec), and Harrigan rallied a record setting time of 1:33.85. After the meet, co-captain Harrigan commented on the team’s continuing success. “For the most part, we all swam extremely well, so now we’re just excited to see what we can do later on in the season.”
At the other end of the pool, the divers faired well. On the men’s side, freshman Artiom Jangols accomplished his first victory ever with a score of 299.10 on the 3-meter board. He was followed closely by freshman Andre Watson (296.10).
