.: Indiana Invitational Results Day 1

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. , November 18th, 2005

Meet Results

The No. 15 women's swimming and diving team closed out day one of the Indiana University Open Invitational with two titles as senior Kristen Bradley, freshman Allison Kay, junior Annica Lofstedt, freshman Sarah Stockwell and junior Leila Vaziri turned in crown-winning efforts. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh chimed in with three event wins at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington, Ind., on Nov. 18.

Notably, this is the first season the IU Invitational will not have a team champion, as the meet changed into an open format to include more swimmers and divers in the event.

"We swam well today," Indiana head coach Ray Looze said. "They really swam tough and won some close races. A lot of swimmers improved their times from the morning, I just think we could have done better in the preliminary session. We will take care of that tomorrow."

In the opening event of the evening, Pittsburgh's quartet of Kristen Brown, Kelly Redcay, Kelly O'Hara and Jordan Wallace won the 200-yard freestyle relay in a B-cut time of 1:32.85. Meanwhile, IU's contingent of Lofstedt, Vaziri, junior Clarissa Wentworth and freshman Abby Cooper placed second in 1:34.43. Notably, Lofstedt's leadoff time of 23.43 cleared the NCAA provisional standard in the 50 free. Additionally, Louisville's relay of Leslie Vanwinkle, Elizabeth Smith, Johanna Myysti and Melanie Greyling claimed third with a time of 1:35.67.

In the 500-yard freestyle, Pittsburgh claimed the top two spots as Kathy Siuda clocked a 4:55.53, while Brown finished second with a 4:57.42. Cincinnati's Ann Degenstein touched in third with a 4:59.90. Senior Doherty Colgin paced the Hoosiers with a fifth-place 5:01.24. Meanwhile, senior Lauren Torpey won the consolation heat for IU with a 4:59.88. Also of note, sophomore Christie Fuchs registered a personal-best time of 5:08.62 for 14th place.

In the 200-yard IM, Bradley swiped the crown with a quick 2:04.36, while Louisville's Vanwinkle (2:05.59) and Jenny Schimenti (2:06.67) closed out the top three. Meanwhile, Vaziri posted a personal-best in the event with a 2:07.05 for 17th place, while freshman Mary Elizabeth Miller also cleared her career low with a 2:10.26 for 19th.

In the 50-yard freestyle, Pittsburgh continued to earn titles as Jordan Wallace touched first in a B-cut time of 23.35, while IU's Lofstedt came in second with a B-cut time of her own at 23.54. Meanwhile, Vaziri rounded out the top three for the Hoosiers in 23.74.

In the final event of the evening, the IU squad of Vaziri, Stockwell, Kay and Lofstedt powered to the 400-yard medley relay title with a 3:48.76, while Pittsburgh's team of Andrea Shoust, Ruth Seiffert, Brittany Stevens and Brown took second in 3:51.41. Louisville's contingent of Vanwinkle, Heather Meng, Schimenti and Greyling came in third in 3:52.85.
