.: Davidson Invitational Results Day 1

DAVIDSON, N.C. , November 18th, 2005

Meet Results

Lifted by sophomore Will Broughton’s first-place swim in the 500 free, Davidson leads the men’s team competition after day one of the annual Davidson Invite, while the Wildcat women trail College of Charleston for second place.

At the end of Friday night’s finals, Indiana University (Pa.) sits in second behind the Davidson men with Washington & Lee in third, followed by College of Charleston in fourth and VMI in fifth. On the women’s side, IUP is in third place with the University of North Florida in fourth, Gardner-Webb in fifth and Limestone College in sixth.

Highlighting Davidson’s opening-day efforts for the women were seniors Megan Hollar and Kristen Shields. In the 500 free, Shields took first with a time of 5:05.20, more than a full second faster than the runner-up. Junior Ellie Trefzger and freshman Alanna Ream followed in third and fourth, respectively, in the event. Later, Hollar touched first in the 200 IM at 2:08.82. The women capped off the evening with the top swim in the 400 medley relay with freshmen Paige Tindall and Courtney Sanders teaming with Hollar and Shields to post a mark of 3:59.28.

For the men, Broughton’s outstanding individual performance in the 500 free was complemented by third- and fifth-place finishes in the event by freshmen Merritt Peele and Andrew Carlson, respectively. Sophomore Adam Topaz turned in a Wildcat top-10 performer time of 1:58.59 for third in the 200 IM, althought he entered finals with the day’s fastest preliminary swim. Three Davidson men finaled in the 50 free — sophomores Fiete Stegger and Jon Smith, and freshman Miguel Rodriguez — with Stegger taking fourth for the highest Wildcat finish. Stegger and Smith joined senior Brad Poole and freshman Scott Frantz to finish the day with a runner-up finish in the 400 medley relay.
