.: Roberts, Patterson, Claar, Richards Garner Weekly Awards

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. , November 16th, 2005

BYU's Leilani Roberts and Utah's Kelsey Patterson have been named the Mountain West Conference Women's Swimmer and Diver of the Week. While, UNLV's Johan Claar and Utah's Sterling Richards have been named the Mountain West Conference Men's Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively.

It marks the first weekly honor for Roberts and the fourth for Patterson, including her second this season.

Freshman Roberts took first place in all five events she swam, including three individual wins in dual meets against UNLV (Nov. 11) and San Diego State (Nov. 12). In BYU's win over UNLV, she picked up first-place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 24.19, just .15 seconds ahead of second place. She also won the 100-yard freestyle in 51.54, marking the best time in the conference this season. In addition, she was a member of the 400-yard medley relay team that captured top honors. In the win over San Diego State, she won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:53.64, the top mark in the conference this season, and was a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay team (1:48.90).

Patterson, a junior from Edmonton, Alta., swept both diving events against San Diego State (Nov. 11) and UNLV (Nov. 12). The UNLV meet marked the third straight meet that Patterson has won both boards. She tallied 290.70 points in the 1-meter, which marks the best total in the conference this season, and 359.62 points in the 3-meter, an 86.25-point margin of victory, against San Diego State. Patterson won the 1-meter with 283.80 points and the 3-meter with 287.30 points against UNLV.

Claar gathers his second weekly award, while Sterling picks up his fifth career weekly accolade and his second this year.

Claar, a freshman from Bankeryd, Sweden, won all six of his individual races over the weekend. The six victories give him 11 wins out of 12 swims this season, and he has won his last 10 events. Against BYU (Nov. 11), he won the 500-yard freestyle (4:34.72), the 1000-yard freestyle (9:30.62) and the 200-yard butterfly (1:51.21). In UNLV's win over Utah (Nov. 12), he captured the 500 free (4:42.58), 1000 free (9:44.73) and 200 fly (1:54.10). Claar owns the top times in the conference in the 1000 free and 200 fly.

Richards, a senior from Salt Lake City, Utah, claimed both diving titles against UNLV last week. It marks the third time this season that Richards has swept both the 1-meter and 3-meter events. He scored 356.90 points on the 1-meter board, a 66.10-point margin of victory, en route to posting the best score in the MWC this season. He finished with 316.60 points in the 3-meter, outdistancing himself from second place by 26.20 points.
