Randolph-Macon Women Posts Victories Over Sweet Briar, Emory & Henry

The Randolph-Macon College women's swimming team travelled to Sweet Briar College in Sweet Briar, Virginia just north of Lynchburg on Friday, November 11th for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) meet with the host Vixens and the Wasps of Emory & Henry College. The Yellow Jackets earned two victories, defeating Sweet Briar, 64-31, and Emory & Henry, 75-19. That makes Randolph-Macon 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

Sophomore Maureen McLaughlin won two individual events -- the 50-meter freestyle (:29.60) and the 100 free (1:05.15). She was named the ODAC Swimmer of the Week for her performance.

Senior Erin Ewalt placed first in three events -- the 200 free (2:15.72), 100 butterfly (1:11.56) and 100 backstroke (1:09.26). Her time in the 100 back was a Prothro Natatorium pool record, breaking a previous record set in 1979. Ewalt now holds three pool records at Sweet Briar (100 and 200 backstroke and 400 individual medley). Junior Heather Porter was first in the 800 free (10:53.30) and second in the 100 free (1:08.83). Freshman Meredith Walters earned the first win of her career, in the 200 individual medley (2:44.88), and was also third in the 100 breaststroke (1:31.32).

Another freshman, Cara Copeman, also won for the first time, placing first in the 400 free (5:34.17). Junior Clare O'Loughlin placed second in the 800 free and 400 free. Sophomore Kim Schneller was second in the 100 breast and third in the 200 IM. Sophomore Michelle Markwith came in third in the 100 back. The 200 medley relay team of Markwith, Schneller, sophomore Meg Patterson, and Walters started the meet by finishing first (2:20.34). The Yellow Jackets will host an ODAC meet with Randolph-Macon Woman's College and Guilford College Saturday, November 19 at 1:00 p.m. in the Estes Aquatic Center at the Brock Sports and Recreation Center on the Randolph-Macon campus in Ashland.
