.: Madeira, Leong, Serra Collect Missouri Valley Conference Weekly Honors

November 16th, 2005

This week’s Missouri Valley Conference Swimming and Diving Athletes of the Week are Isabel Madeira and Jessica Leong of Southern Illinois. Additionally, Missouri State's Victor Serra is honored for his efforts.

Madeira picked up wins in the 100-Yard Freestyle and the 200-Yard Freestyle Saturday in SIU’s dual meet against Drury University. It was the second time that she has won in both events this season. She finished first out of six swimmers in the 100-Yard Freestyle with a time of 52.24, a personal-best time as well as the top time in the MVC. She also won the 200-Yard Freestyle (1st of 6) with a time of 1:54.47. Her time in the 200 Free is second in the MVC only to her 1:53.05 from earlier this season. Madeira also swam on the winning 400-Yard Freestyle Relay team at the meet.

Leong had another top week on the board. After picking up the first of the required two NCAA-qualifying scores in the first two meets of the season, she sealed the deal by scoring her second NCAA-qualifying scores on both the 1-Meter and 3-Meter Dives. Against Drury, she won in the 1- Meter Dive (1st of 6) with a score of 269.02, four points higher than the NCAA-qualifying standard. It was also a personal-best, topping her 268.95 from the week before. Leong also won in the 3-Meter Dive (1st of 5) with a score of 297.07, 17 points higher than the NCAA- qualifying standard. This score was also a personal-best, beating her score of 296.00 that she scored on the 3-Meter board against Evansville. Both of her scores are also the top scores so far this season in the MVC.

Victor Serra swam the third leg of the 200 medley relay, Saturday against Truman State University. The relay team finished in first place and also set a new pool record at the Pershing Natatorium at 1:34.40. Serra also had a first-place finish in the 100 butterfly at 51.68. Serra anchored the 400 freestyle relay that finished second to Truman State at 3:13.57.
