.: Harvard Men Defeat Cornell, Dartmouth

BOSTON, MA , November 12th, 2005

Meet Results

Sophomore Sam Wollner won two races as the Harvard men's swimming and diving team took first place in the final seven events of the day for a season-opening sweep of Cornell and Dartmouth in a home meet Saturday at Simmons College.

The Crimson (2-0, 2-0 EISL) trailed Cornell (1-1, 1-1 EISL) for much of the afternoon, but its run of seven straight wins turned a 26-point deficit into a 25-point win. Harvard led throughout against the Big Green (0-2, 0-2 EISL) and extended its winning streak to 12 straight dual meets. Cornell defeated Dartmouth, 238-62.

Wollner's first win came in the 200-yard butterfly, as he finished in 1:53.76, followed by freshman Bill Jones. Wollner later took the 500 freestyle in 4:32.96, leading three Crimson swimmers in the top four and pulling Harvard to within a point of Cornell at 113.5-112.5.

Jones then won the next race, the 100 butterfly, in 50.34 to give Harvard its first lead over the Big Red, 124.5-120.5. He was one of two freshmen to register an individual victory in his first collegiate meet. Eric Lynch emerged victorious in his first collegiate race, winning the 1,000 free in 9:29.81.

Senior captain David Cromwell started the run of Crimson wins with his triumph in the 200 back, where he finished in 1:48.42. The other team captain, Bill Cocks followed that performance by taking the 200 breaststroke in 2:08.81, setting up Wollner and Jones to give Harvard the lead for good against Cornell.

Senior Danil Rybalko, sophomore Geoff Rathgeber and a Crimson 200 free relay team finished up the meet with wins. Rybalko won the three-meter diving with 304.6 points, Rathgeber finished in 1:51.72 to take the 200 individual medley, and Harvard took the relay in 1:23.94. Seniors Mark Knepley and Cromwell, freshman David Guernsey and sophomore Pat Quinn made up the winning relay squad.
