.: Wisconsin Splits With Northwestern
MADISON, Wis. , November 10th, 2005
Sarnecki first won the 50-yard freestyle-an event she normally doesn’t compete in-with a time of 24.28.
Sarnecki later touched the wall first in the 100-yard breaststroke, taking the event in a time of 1:04.01.
Sarnecki also was part of the winning 200-yard medley relay. Junior Susan Johnson, sophomore Jenny Gelden and senior Sarah Hernandez also took part in the relay. The foursome finished ahead of Wildcats with a time of 1:45.51.
This meet was a special day for Sarnecki and the rest of the seniors. The final home meet of the season marks Senior Day for the Badgers.
Seven seniors—Michael Hamm, Emily Carpenter, Hernandez, Rebecca Johansson, Sarnecki, Anna Trinidad and Amanda Witte—were honored before the start of the dual meet.
Johansson also wasted no time in her final home dual meet. The distance freestyle picked up a win in the 1000 freestyle in a season best 10:12.62. Freshman Jennifer Illescas picked up a win in the 500-yard freestyle. The freshman up and comer managed to dip below the 5-minute mark (4:59.37) to claim the victory.
Sophomore Jenny Gelden also made a splash for the Badgers. The sprinter won the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 56.59.
Other event winners included Northwestern's Andrea Hupman. Hupman took 2 mid-distance events by claiming the 100-yard freestyle (51.02) and 200-yard freestyle (1:51.14).
For Wisconsin, juniors Susan Johnson won the 100-yard backstroke (58.02) and Andrea Wiesner won the 400-yard individual medley (4:25.02).
On the boards, Witte led Wisconsin with second-place finishes in the 1-meter (287.48) and 3-meter (328.28) events, while Laura Davidson received third-place finishes in the 1-meter (255.68) and 3-meter (303.30).
“Amanda dived solidly. She has been solid all year,” diving coach Josh Seykora said . “Laura also did well, getting her zone cut tonight. It was a breakthrough meet for her.”
Witte was outlasted by Northwestern diver Chelsea Davis. Davis claimed both boards for the 'Cats.
Wisconsin ended the meet defeating Northwestern 148-75.
“All in all, I was pretty happy with the meet,” head coach Eric Hansen said. “On the women’s side, in terms of our preparation, I think we are ahead of where we were last year, and we will find out more about that in Texas.”
The Wisconsin’s men’s swimming and diving team was up for a challenge against Northwestern. The Wildcats have a dominant set of returnees for last season, including NCAA champion Matt Grevers. This season is a rebuilding year for the Badgers. They only have one senior in Hamm and one junior in Tom Molzahn.
Despite the handicap, the men managed to pull off two event wins. Molzahn continued is winning ways by taking the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4.34:59.
Freshman Scott Rice stepped to the plate for the Badgers to capture the team’s second win for the evening. Rice claimed the 200-yard butterfly victory in a time of 1:51.32.
Hamm finished his final home meet with two third-place finishes--the 200-yard freestyle (1:42.73) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:37.17).
In diving, Josh Bonner took second on the 3-meter (373.95) and third on 1-meter (297.83) to lead UW.
In the end, Northwestern won all but two events and took the best of the Badgers, as Wisconsin fell 125-99.
The Wildcats dominated the meet from the beginning. Brian Davis started the momentum for Northwestern. Davis captured the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:32.66 in the evening's first individual event. The time established a new pool record.
Freshman Eric Nilsson added to NU's depth. Nilsson has won an event in every meet of his collegiate career so far-this time capturing the 200-yard freestyle.
Grevers was a winner in the 50-yard freestyle and the 200-yard backstroke, while classmate and reigning Big Ten Swimmer of the Week Mike Alexandrov was a winner in the 400-yard IM as well as in the 200-yard breaststroke. Alexandrov's 400-yard IM was good enough for a new pool record.
Sophomore Kyle Bubolz won the 100-yard freestyle for the Wildcats, who closed the meet with a victory in the 200-yard free relay.
On the diving boards, sophomore Ryan McIntosh won both the 1- and 3-meter events in pool record breaking fashion.
