Milwaukee head coach Dave Clark announced the additions of Joel Rollings and Erik Wiken before the new season began last month.
Rollings is no stranger to the Panther program, having served as a volunteer assistant since the 2001 season. He brings an extensive swimming background to the position. Most recently he has been the head swim coach at the Germantown Swim Club, a position he held since 2000. While at the club, he coached numerous state champions and one state record holder.
Other coaching stops for Rollings include Bartlesville, Okla., Fort Worth, Tex. and Grafton, Wis. He was the associate head coach for Phillips 66 Splash Club while in Oklahoma from 1998-2000. His time in Texas was spent as the graduate assistant coach for Texas Christian University from 1996-98. He also served as the head coach at Grafton High School from 1992-96. Rollings earned a master's degree in liberal arts from TCU in 1998 and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1994 with a degree in kinesiology. He was on the swim team while at UWM, earning the most-improved award in 1993. As a senior, he set personal-best times in the 200 free, 500 free and 1650 free at the Mid-Continent Championships. Wiken comes to the Panthers with a varied background as a swim coach. Most recently, he was the assistant coach for the Southwest Aquatic Team in Greendale, Wis. While there, he wrote and ran all practices for the 13-14 age group and traveled to all meets including the Wisconsin State Meet. He was also the assistant senior coach for the Southwest Team in 2004-05. He is a May 2004 graduate of the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, receiving a degree in Kinesiology from the school of Education and Human Development. While working on his degree, he accrued more than 400 volunteer hours with Twin Cities Aquatics working on both the senior and age group levels. He started his college career as a swimmer at Nebraska, where he was named second team All-Academic Big 12 as a sophomore. He was one of the team's top backstrokers as a freshman, finishing fourth in the 200 back and seventh in the 100 back at the Big 12 Championships. He was also an NCAA qualifier in both the 100 backstroke and the 400 medley relay. That followed a stellar career at Marquette University in high school, where he was the 1999 State Champion in the 100 butterfly and runner-up in the 100 backstroke.
