On a recent spring morning, one of the most accomplished coaches in Olympic history paced the Stanford pool deck, intently following the movements of 22 swimmers in the sun-dappled water.
The swimmers were not among the Olympic medalists Quick has coached in six Summer Games. None held a world record or was a member of one of his 12 NCAA championship teams. These were students in Quick's swim class.
