.: 2005 NAIA Championships: Cal Baptist Women, Simon Fraser Men Win

The California Baptist University women finished runner-up last year to Simon Fraser University (B.C.) but turned the tables on the Clan on day three and were able to hold the lead for the school’s first-ever NAIA Swimming and Diving National Championship. CBU finished with 551 points, SFU grabbed 496 points and Cumberland College (Ky.) finished third with 293 points.
On the men’s side Simon Fraser defended its title, garnering 639 points, behind strong performances from Elliot Burger and Felix Steinhauer. It is the Clan’s 17th team title. The CBU men finished second with 580 points while Spring Hill College (Ala.) finished a distant third with 217 points.
The Clan’s Kathryn Rosberg started off the night by smashing the 1650-yard freestyle record and successfully defending last year’s title. Rosberg’s time of 16:51.80 beat the old record set by Lyndsay Devaney of Cal Baptist in 2003 by nearly 18 seconds (17:09.98). Burger finished first on the men’s side, defending last year’s title, while SFU’s Travis Musgrave finished second for the Clan.
Freshman Kimmie Cook led Cal Baptist to victory on the women’s side, winning the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:04.06. She added a second place finish in the 400-yard freestyle with teammates Katelyn Butler, Cheryl Ogden and Mary Sherman. Cook and SFU’s Rosberg were named Outstanding Female Performers.
The men’s 400-yard freestyle relay team from Simon Fraser ended the night with a record setting performance. The team, made up of Steinhauer, Lubrey Lim, Burger and Paul Wilkins, finished with a time of 3:01.43, breaking the old record of 3:01.5 set by SFU in 2003. Wilkins was a member of the team that set the old record. Burger and Steinhauer shared Outstanding Male Performer honors.
SFU’s Hayley Rosenlund was named Oustanding Female Diver and the Clan’s Grant Brehaut was named Outstanding Male Diver of the Year. Rosenlund won the 1-meter and 3-meter diving on the women’s side while Brehaut won both events on the men’s side.
Liam Donnelly, who was named the women’s Swimming and Diving Coach of the Year last year, took home the honor on the women’s side this year. Scott Rabalais of Savannah Art and Design earned the women’s award this year. SCAD finished sixth on the women’s side with 199 points.
