.: Former IU Coach, Son of Legend, Brian Counsilman Drowns

Bloomington, IN , June 30th, 2005

Brian Counsilman, former Indiana University assistant, and son of coaching legend James "Doc" Counsilman passed away Tuesday following a workout in the pool named for his father.

On June 20th, Counsilman underwent a successful angioplasty to relieve two blocked arteries. A week later, given the green light to exercise, Counsilman was back in the pool.

Following a morning swim on Tuesday, Counsilman returned for a second workout. Following couple of lengths, Counsilman passed out and inhaled water. Lifeguards on duty successfully used a automated defibrillator to regain the pulse. By then, Counsilman had swallowed too much water and he passed away around 9:00 pm with mother Marge at his side.

Counsilman, who assisted Dave Tanner this past season at Bloomington North High School will be cremated and placed next to Doc at Clear Creek Cemetary. Though no funeral is planned, the BNHS team is gathering today at the Lower Cascades Shelter.

Cards may be sent to Marge Counsilman at 3120 Coppertree Dr, Bloomington, IN 47401.
