HONOLULU, HI , January 8th, 2005
The Aggies scraped by the Badgers 62-60, but easily topped host Hawai’i 84-38 and South Dakota 110-12 despite 2004 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year Rebecca Sturdy only swimming one race.
The Aggies will eventually end up second against the Badgers after scores from the two-day Hawai’i Diving Invitational are added in on Sunday, but will still easily defeat the Rainbow Wahine as well as South Dakota despite competing in two less events. A decision was made to include diving scores from the diving invitational as a part of the dual meet scores despite A&M’s divers being in Miami.
The A&M divers did participate in a meet in Miami on Friday against Colorado State, Florida, Florida International, Kentucky and Miami. Junior Rosie Whiting (Burley-in-Wharfdale, England) finished fifth on the three-meter with a seasonal-best score of 258.60 while taking seventh on the three-meter with a tally of 231.45. Freshman Mari-Michelle Musselman (San Antonio) finished seventh and eighth, respectively, as well.
Back in Honolulu, sophomore Jenna Wheeler (Ft. Smith, Ark.) earned a three-second victory in the 200-yard butterfly in an NCAA consideration time of 2:01.44, a time faster than which she won the Big 12 title with a season ago.
Senior Millie Reynolds (San Antonio) won the 100-yard butterfly in a seasonal-best time of 56.15 to give the Aggies a sweep of the fly events.
Sophomore Rebecca Sturdy (Anacortes, Wash.) made her one event count as she grabbed first place in the 50-yard freestyle in 23.44.
The Aggies began the meet with a solid first place showing in the 200-yard medley relay. The group of Courtney Patterson (Plano, Texas), Erin Briskie (Dallas), Reynolds and Danielle Townsend (Bakersfield, Calif.) cruised to the win in 1:44.13.
The Aggies will compete again next Saturday, Jan. 15, at a senior circuit meet in San Antonio.
