Athens, OH , January 15th, 2005

In their first competition after a six-week layoff, the Ohio men's and women's swimming and diving squads each came out victorious in dual meets with Denison Friday evening at the Ohio Aquatics Center. The Bobcat women registered a 151-91 victory over the Big Red while the Ohio men won their first meet of the season by a final of 135-102.

The Ohio women (5-1-1, 2-1-1 MAC) won 10 of 13 events in the meet and established three season-best performances. An even balance on the evening saw only one Bobcat swimmer repeat as an event winner as Michaela Hahn-Lawson (Painesville, Ohio) took first in both the 200 freestyle (1:55.68) and 100 breaststroke (1:08.24). Another highlight performer was Barbara de Sa' (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), who took first in the 100 butterfly with a season-best time of 58.84. Other Bobcats to earn first place finishes include Ilse Petersen (Johannesburg, South Africa) in the 1000 freestyle (10:27.55), Becky McGaughey (Nicholasville, Ky.) in the 200 individual medley (2:11.83), Melissa Dunn (Noblesville, Ind.) in the 100 backstroke (59.63), and Jessica Waites (Toledo, Ohio) in the 500 freestyle (5:10.67). Emily Wylam (Yorktown, Va.), Hahn-Lawson, de Sa', and McGaughey teamed to register the top Ohio time this season in the 200 medley relay, taking the event in a time of 1:49.15.

On the men's side, the Bobcats (1-3, 0-2 MAC) took nine of 13 events, including four season-best performances. Like the women, the Ohio swimmers used a balanced attack, with only one repeat winner. Donald Jupp (Stow, Ohio) captured the 50 and 100 freestyle events with times of 21.65 and 48.24, respectively. Luke Herlehy (Batavia, Ill.) recorded his best 1000 freestyle performance of the season to date, winning the event with a time of 9:52.10. Matt Bey (Gahanna, Ohio) in the 200 individual medley (2:00.16) and Brian Teske (Dayton, Ohio) in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.61), each earned first place finishes with season-best times. Mike Shelby (New Albany, Ohio) added a first place finish for the Bobcat men as well, taking the 100 butterfly with a clock of 52.62. Phillip Zawadzki (Norristown, Pa.), Teske, Shelby, and Jan Wuttig (Solo, Ohio) teamed to capture the 200 medley relay for Ohio with a 1:36.45 finish.

Bobcat divers Debbie Thornbury (Orange Park, Fla.) and Rick Wade (Wooster, Ohio) had big nights for Ohio as well. Thornbury won both the one (271.35) and three meter (264.15) events, qualifying for the NCAA Pre-Quals with her score in the one meter competition. Wade duplicated the same feat, taking first in both the one (301.80) and three-meter (290.10) dives and earning a place in the Pre-Quals with his one-meter performance. The one-meter scores for both Thornbury and Wade were season and career highs.

Denison's Sarah Peck was the only individual swimmer on the women's side to register a victory, taking both the 50 and 100 freestyle events. The Big Red men were led by Bryce Petersen's first place finishes in the 200 and 500 freestyle events. Both the Denison men and women took first place in the 200 freestyle relays.

The Bobcats will be back in action tomorrow afternoon when they host Ohio State at 1 p.m., at the Ohio Aquatics Center. The Ohio women currently hold a 53-meet home winning streak in dual contests. Admission is free and open to the public.
