Georgia's Mary DeScenza, Sarah Poewe and Peter Verhoef all led the host squad with A-cut marks, led by DeScenza's two. DeScenza stamped her ticket to the NCAA Championships with her efforts in the 100 backstroke and the 100 butterfly, while Poewe qualified in the 100 breaststroke and Verhoef qualified in the 100 fly. After two days, Georgia women lead California by a score of 699.50 to 650. The men's team (684) is second going into the third day of competition behind Tennessee (702.50).
"We had a good swim all the way around today," said Georgia coach Jack Bauerle. "Verhoef was great but we had kind of been expecting that out of him. (Jessica) Cole also had a great one out there and Karen Guilkey was one of our surprises out there today."
For the women, Tricia Harm, Poewe, DeScenza and Cole lowered Georgia's NCAA provisional qualifying time by finishing second in 1:39.86 in the 200-yard medley relay.
In the 400 individual medley, both Laura Conway (4:19.54) and Alyssa Kiel (4:21.42) lowered their B-cut times. While DeScenza (52.55) lowered her A-cut time and won the 100 butterfly, Guilkey (53.96) lowered her B-cut time and Beth Grams (54.83) recorded her first B-cut mark in the event.
Cole (1:47.18) lowered her B-cut time in the 200 free and Claire Maust (1:48.79) notched her first B-cut effort in the race.
In the 100 breaststroke, Poewe (1:01.18) recorded an A-cut mark in winning the event and Gretchen Corliss (1:02.98) lowered her B-cut time. DeScenza (54.10) bettered her A-cut time in the 100 backstroke and Aleksandra Putra (55.36) lowered her B-cut mark.
In the 800 free relay, DeScenza, Maust, Cole and Carr (7:11.68) recorded a B-cut time in Georgia's first competition of the season. Sebastien Rouault (3:51.54) lowered his B-cut time in the 400 IM to begin the men's action on Saturday afternoon.
In the 100 fly, Verhoef posted an A-cut time of 47.02 in the prelims, setting a personal best and recording the second-best time in school history. He then won the finals with a time of 47.12.
Jonathan Schmidt (47.58) recorded a B-cut in the final.
Chris Colwill topped the field in the 1-meter dive with a score of 371.65 and Genya Gouzeev (345.35) took second place in the event.
Matthew Owen, Gil Stovall, Damian Alleyne and Rouault (6:31.51) won the 800 free relay and recorded a B-cut time in Georgia's first showing of the year.
Schmidt (47.53) was able to lower his B-cut time during a 100 fly time trial. The final day of the UGA Fall Invitational is on Sunday with the prelims beginning at 9:30 a.m. and the finals beginning at 3 p.m.
