.: U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Splits With Montclair State

The Mariner men (4-0) posted a 129-102 victory over the Red Hawks, while the Mariner women (3-1) dropped its first dual meet 88-143.
Carpenter won the 200-yard individual medley (2:01.52) and 100-yard freestyle (50.31). He also swam the second leg on the first-place 400-yard medley relay team, joined by Scott Pearson, Jesse Bowser and Victor Policarpio. The quartet posted a time of 3:44.28.
"I am happy with our victory today," said head coach Sean Tedesco. "This meet was a good finish to the first half of our season."
Sophomore Matt Ellison was a double event winner in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:36.53) and 200-yard butterfly (2:06.40) while David Scarberry took first in the 500-yard freestyle (5:00.22).
Scarberry's second place finish in the 200-yard freestyle marked his best time of the season at 1:49.69. In the same race, junior Hugh Chambrovich dropped five seconds off his season best time finishing with a 1:59.16.
Steve Stockl's swim in the 200-yard butterfly marked his season best by two seconds with a time of 2:18.37. He placed third behind teammates Ellison and Scott Murphy.
Mariner Junior Mickey Hand won the second portion of the diving with a score of 161.63.
For Montclair State (5-3), Ricky Miller was victorious in the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.58) and Bryant Edwards won the early section of the 1-meter diving. John Adams took first place in the 200-yard backstroke and Drew Decagna won the 200-yard breaststroke (2:20.51). MSU also won the 400-yard freestyle relay as Miller, Matt Capilla, Ahmed Abdelaal and Ryan Gorsky, recorded a time of 3:35.46.
With the Mariner women suffering their first loss of the season, senior diver Marlaina Pippen, from Huntsville, AL, won both sections of the diving competition with scores or 127.80 and 132.45, respectively.
Sophomore Robyn Jimenez also had a successful meet, hitting the wall first in the 200 breaststroke (2:40.23).
The Mariners also won the 400-yard freestyle relay (4:24.91), swum by Morgan Evans, Jacqueline Paul, Allyson Christensen, anchored by Jennifer Johnson.
Sophomore Caitlyn Lundy`s swim in the 100-yard freestyle at 1:22.38 is one second away from her season's best.
"We swam well against a very good MSU women's team," said Tedesco. "We showed a lot of guts tonight."
For the winning Red Hawks, Kim Corredor, the Montclair triple-event winner, captured the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:26.58 and later won the 200-yard butterfly (2:24.70). She also helped the MSU 400-yard medley relay team to victory, with a winning time of 4:27.41. Kristine Bates, also a member of the 400 medley relay team, took top honors in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles with times of 26.32 and 57.57, respectively.
