.: US Merchant Marine Swims Baruch College, Queens College
New York, NY , December 11th, 2005
Johnson, a sophomore from San Antonio, TX, proved important by holding off Queens College swimmer Jamie Choi in the 100-m backstroke, and placing second behind Mariner junior Kimberly Sercel. Her second place finish put the Mariners up 39-31 going into the last three events.
Prior to the 100-m backstroke, the Mariners were only ahead by one point.
Head coach Sean Tedesco chose to switch around his roster and moved junior Morgan Evans to the 100-m breaststroke to help secure the victory over Queens College. His quick thinking worked and Evans withstood the pressure, helping to keep the points in Mariner favor by finishing second behind Kings Point sophomore Robyn Jimenez.
The women defeated Baruch College easily, 63-32, in the second meet of the evening.
The win was aided by first place finishes by the 200-m medley relay, swum by Sercel, Jimenez, Meaghan Foster and Kelsey Newell, and double event wins by Evans, who finished first in the 200-m and 100-m freestyle. Sercel finished first in the 100-m backstroke, and Jimenez finished first in the 100-m breaststroke.
The 200-m freestyle relay teams swept the competition with a 1-2 win over Baruch.
With only half the team traveling, the Mariner men also had two big wins on Friday blowing out Baruch College 75-20 and Queens College 76-19.
Sophomore Jay Carpenter had double-event wins in both the 100-m butterfly and the 100-m breaststroke for both meets. Freshman Chris Funke finished behind in both events as well.
Victor Policarpio and David Scarberry were also double-event winners in both meets with first place finishes in the 400-m and 800-m freestyle (Scarberry) and 50-m and 100-m freestyle (Policarpio).
The Mariner Swim and Dive Team will compete next at Montclair State in Middletown, N.J. on Dec. 13 at 6 pm.
