.: Weekend Preview: December 1-4

December 1st, 2005

Call it big weekend #2. With signing week past, coaches can focus once again on their teams.  With a full slate of meets involving the vast majority of the top twenty-five in each division, the first weekend after Thanksgiving highlights some of the best in collegiate swimming. While all eyes will be drawn to the big names at Auburn and the big teams in Texas, another fifty-plus meets dot the weekend schedule. Here's a brief rundown of what to watch.

Schedule

Army-Navy - It's not just football folks. While the women's meet has been a bit of a lopsided affair the past few years, both men's teams go in undefeated, "For many reasons, this meet is one of the highlights of our schedule each season," said Navy swimming head coach Bill Roberts. "For everyone within our program, it means the most to them."

US Open - Most of the big names will be there Hoff, Klochkova, van den Hoogenband, Weir, Usher, etc. Ryan Lochte of Florida will headline a somewhat thin list of collegians.  Florida, Alabama and Auburn will  bring along full squads with another 30-some teams bringing smaller contingents. Texas Invitational - There's not a better D-I meet this weekend.  Five of the top eight men's teams will be there - Arizona, Cal, Michigan, and USC join the host Longhorns.  Without Cal and Michigan the women's side will be slightly weaker, but the meet will give much of the mainland their first glimpse at Hawaii's Melanie Schlanger, and showcase a strong Wisconsin squad. Ohio State Invitational - Everyone wants to get some swims in the new pool before this season's Big Ten and next year's NCAA meet so think of the OSU invite as the pre-Big Ten Championships.  Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Penn State, Michigan State, and Ohio State will be there along with Bowling Green, and selected Kenyon men.  Top 28 will come back each night, top sixteen will score.  Wondering where the rest of the Big Ten is? Purdue will send two to the Open while Indiana visits Northwestern in a good show of star power vs. depth.  Something tells us the outcome of NU-IU will fuel the message boards through December.

Miami (OH) and Summa Care (Akron) Invitational - Want big meets?  Both of these will feature huge fields.  And while the meets themselves will be huge, the NCAA implications for several teams will be equally large.  Kenyon, Emory, Denison, Wabash and Johns Hopkins will all look for qualifying NCAA cuts in Miami with Cincinnati, Cleveland St., Denver, Oakland, WJU and Wright State will make it a crowded affair.  In Akron, it will be Buffalo, Clarion, Duquesne, Ohio, Xavier, Illinois St, St. Bonaventure and the host Zips doing battle.

Georgia Invitational - Though lacking the depth of a year when it hosts nationals, Georgia's Jack Bauerle is right when he says, "There will be some talented teams here this weekend, so we're expecting some pretty fast times."  Virginia and South Carolina will bring full teams while Tennessee and Harvard will bring men and Cal-Berkeley and UCLA will bring the women.  It won't be big, but the lineups should offer some closely-contested races.

EMU Invitational  - Like Miami and Akron, this meet will keep the pool full all day.  The Michigan women, fresh off blistering swims of Kaitlin Brady at Texas A&M, highlight a field that includes Allegheny, Calvin, Findlay, Guelph, Kalamazoo, Waterloo, Wayne State, Oakland, Olivet, and Penn State Behrend.

Notre Dame Invitational - An interesting mix of teams will line up at Rolfs Aquatic Center this weekend.  For one, there's a trio of top D-II teams in Indianapolis, North Dakota, and Truman State.  Then you also have Utah and Wyoming who you'd have thought could have found a place closer to swim one another than South Bend.  SLU and Hillsdale will round out the field.  And talk about the travel schedule from hell - how about North Dakota visiting Milwaukee, Minneapolis, and South Bend on successive weekends.

The Little Guys (and Gals) - In addition to the Miami Invite, several additional D-III teams will look to get their cuts this weekend.  They include the TYR/ CollegeSwimming.com Classic (Gustavus Adolphus, St. Olaf, St. Cloud, Lake Forest, Illinois Tech, Lewis and host Carthage) - again, you'd think Olaf, Gustavus, and St Cloud could have found a place closer than Kenosha.   Also check the Wheaton Invitational (UW-Milwaukee, Hope, Wash U, North Central, Calvin), if history holds someone will be close to a national record.  With Washington 7 Lee, Rowan, TCNJ, Gettysburg and Bloomsburg, the Franklin & Marshall invite will also throw down some NCAA cuts.  The Liberty League Championships are this weekend as is the DePauw Invite (Alma, Centere, IWU, Millikin, Monmouth, Rhodes, Rose-Hulman, Transylvania, Wabash and Wittenburg).

And a few more dual meets?  Idaho, Loyola, Nevada, UC Santa Cruz, and San Jose State will get together for a whirlwind of duals in Santa Clara.  There's also Emory vs. Sewanee, Penn-Columbia, Kentucky-Arkansas, Missouri State-Lindenwood, Bucknell-UMBC, and the Iowa State-Northern Iowa women.
