.: Sprinters Dominate Swimmer-of-the-Week

Six swimmers earned CollegeSwimming.com National Collegiate Swimmer-of-the-Week (NCSW) honors for their performances October 18-24, 2004. The six were selected by a panel of collegiate coaches and nominated by coaches, sports information directors, conference representatives and CollegeSwimming.com staffers. The National Collegiate Swimmer-of-the-Week Awards are underwritten by Counsilman-Hunsaker & Associates, a multi-service engineering, planning, and design firm that specializes in aquatic facilities.
Joe Bortoch
University of Nevada Las Vegas
Bortoch led UNLV to a 152½-141½ upset victory over #17 Arizona State. Bartoch was a double-winner, taking the 100 freestyle (45.99) and the 100 butterfly (49.79), while he also swam on the winning 200 medley relay.
Anja Carmen
Southern Methodist University
Carmen won the 100 (55.57), 200 backstroke (1:58.26) and the 200 Butterfly (2:01.83) as the Mustangs won the 11th Annual SMU Classic. Carmen also won the consolation final in the 400 IM (4:22.41) and split a 1:50.23 as a part of the school and pool-record setting 800 free relay (7:20.04). Carmen was named the outstanding swimmer of the meet
Cole Tedhams
Indianapolis University
A NCAA Division II national champion, Tedhams led the Greyhounds to a 116-59 win over Ashland University. Tedham provisionally qualified for the 2005 NCAA Championships with wins in the 50 (21.10) and 100 freestyle. Tedhams’ 400 freestyle relay leadoff split of 46.75 was also a NCAA Cut.
Lindsey Gall
Seattle University
Gall stamped her ticket to nationals with a 27.70 in the 50-meter freestyle. Gall earned a second ‘B’ cut with her win in the 100-meter butterfly (1:05.90). Gall swam on the Redhawk 2nd place 200 free relay as the Redhawks narrowly lost to NAIA power house Simon Frasier 106-94.
Elliot Rushton
Kenyon College
The defending National Champion in the 500 freestyle showed why he’s the man to beat in 2005. At the NCAC Relays, Rushton led off the 3x500 relay with and “A” cut and a pool record time of 4:33.14. Rushton also swam the 200 as the anchor the 500 crescendo relay and split 1:42.78, played a role on Kenyon’s 200 backstroke, 200 butterfly, 400 IM, and 200 freestyle relays.
Sarah Nicholson
Emory University
Sarah Nicholson was the second Emory Swimmer to earn national honors. Nicholson won two individual events and one relay event in the meet against Agnes Scott College (GA.). Nicholson won the 50 free (25.56) and 100 free (55.29) and played a role on the winning 200 free relay as Emory cruised to an easy 118-52 win.
