The Cal women's swimming team won its season-opener today over Washington, 141-116 at Husky Pool. The Golden Bears won 11 of 14 events and swam the last six events with just one scoring swimmer.

After the meet, Washington coach Mickey Wender had high praise for the Golden Bears, "They are a perennial power and you learn a lot about yourself when you compete against a team like theirs."

Cal had eight different swimmers win individual events, led by double-event winner and true freshman Emily Silver. Silver won the 50 (23.89) and 100 freestyle (51.66) in back-to-back races. Her sister, junior Helen Silver, was a double event winner as well, touching the wall first in the 100 backstroke (56.60) and the 200 backstroke (2:01.98). The meet was something of a homecoming for the Silvers who hail from the Bainbridge Island, near Seattle.

The newest Golden Bears produced in the first meet of the season as freshmen Genevieve Patterson (100 breast, 1:03.12) and Rachel Ridgeway (200 fly, 2:03.20) joined Silver as event winners.

Cal's other event winners were senior Lauren Medina in the 200 freestyle (1:49.73), junior Kate Tiedeman in the 1000 freestyle (10:08.93), and sophomores Erin Reilly in the 500 freestyle (4:58.81) and Annie Babicz in the 100 butterfly (57.48).

The Golden Bears compete tomorrow at 5 p.m. against the University of British Columbia.
