Susan Johnson finished first in two individual events and swam on a winning relay squad to help lead the Wisconsin women's swimming and diving team to an impressive season-opening performance Friday afternoon. The Badgers finished first in all 13 events in the three-team meet held at the UW Natatorium.

The Badger men topped UW-Green Bay 152.5-89.5 and UW-Milwaukee 188-55. The Wisconsin women successfully defeated UW-Green Bay and UW-Milwaukee, posting scores of 198-44 and 200-42, respectively. UW-Green Bay swept their Milwaukee counterparts 171-72 (men) and 141-102 (women). The men outscored the Panthers 171-72, and lost to the Badgers by a 152.5-89.5 margin. The women's squad bested the Panthers 141-101, and was bested by the Badgers 198-44.

Johnson finished first in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 24.05. She went on to win the 200 yard backstroke over seven seconds ahead of the runner-up finisher (2:00.55). Johnson finished the meet by leading the winning 400 freestyle relay (3:34.34) along with Caroline Ackley, Hannah McClurg, and Jenny Will.

Sophomore Amanda Witte placed first on both diving boards, with a score of 218.40 on the 1-meter board and 231.70 on the 3-meter.

"Amanda [Witte] had a very good, consistent meet, as did freshman Laura Davidson," said head diving coach Josh Seykora. "Overall, I'm happy with our performance and think we're heading in the right direction."

Junior Rebecca Johansson posted a win in the 1000 free (10:16.02), while Anna Trinidad took first in the 200 free (1:52.49). Andrea Wiesner won the 200 individual medley (2:08.60). UW also claimed victories from Jenny Gelden in the 200 butterfly (2:10.09), Sarah Hernandez in the 100 free (52.39), Caroline Ackley in the 500 free (5:13.79) and Sierra Lewis in the 200 breaststroke (2:22.73).

The Badgers also took a first place finish from the 400 medley relay squad of Sarah Hernandez, Anna Trinidad, Jenny Gelden, and Jenny Will in a winning time of 3:56.97.

"I thought this meet was a great learning experience for all of us," said head swimming coach Eric Hansen. "The team has a lot of work to do in order to achieve their goals. I think they have a great start. We just need to keep plugging away at it."

Wisconsin next hits the water at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 22 at Iowa City, Iowa.
