On day 1, Minnesota broke open a 136-50 point lead. Seniors Justin Mortimer and Terry Silkaitis were the top performers for the Golden Gophers, each winning three events. Both were part of the winning 800-yard free relay while Mortimer won the 1000-yard freestyle and 200-yard individual medley. Silkaitis won the 50- and 200-yard freestyles. The Tar Heel women claimed the winners of the first seven events and total of eight on the day. A strong first half of the meet led to a 90 point lead over Virginia Tech and a 84 points on Richmond.
