“We’re so happy to get a win in our first Big Ten meet this year, we swam very well today,” said co-head coach Terry Nieszner. “We have several swimmers who are starting this season with the same kinds of performances they had at Big Ten Championships last season, and that’s a great way to start this year.”
The Gophers’ 200-yard medley relay, consisting of Jennifer Hasling, Bridget McCoy, Krista Kezbers, and Sarah Perrott, started the competition by setting the meet record with a time of 1:45.03.
Golden Gopher sophomore Jennifer Hasling took the top spot in two events for Minnesota, swimming in the winning 200 medley relay, and taking first in the 50-yard freestyle. Her time of 23.71 seconds in the 50 free set a meet record.
Minnesota’s Sarah Perrott, a junior, was also a double event winner. In addition to her win in the 200 medley relay, she also won the 100-yard freestyle in a meet-record time of 51.75 seconds.
Junior Kate Hardt was also a strong performer for Minnesota, winning three events against the Hawkeyes. She took first in the 200 and 500-yard freestyle events, and the 400-yard individual medley.
Iowa’s Kelly Werner won three events for the Hawkeyes, including two meet-record performances. Her winning times in the 100-yard backstroke (56.87) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:01.63) set meet records. Werner’s performance in the 200 back meets the NCAA qualifying B standard.
