.: Third Straight Emory Selection Highlights NCSW Honors

Swimmers from Stanford, Indiana, Ouachita Baptist, Cal-State Bakersfield,
Carnegie Mellon and Emory Universities earned National Collegiate
Swimmer-of-the-Week (NCSW) honors for their performances October 25-31, 2004.
Highlighting the week was the third-consecutive selection of an Emory swimmer.
The six were selected by a panel of collegiate coaches and nominated by
coaches, sports information directors, conference representatives and
CollegeSwimming.com staffers. The National Collegiate Swimmer-of-the-Week
Awards are underwritten by Counsilman-Hunsaker & Associates, a multi-service
engineering, planning, and design firm that specializes in aquatic facilities.
Caroline Bruce, Stanford
Wichita, Kansas
Bruce won four events against #6 Texas and #13 Southern Cal. The 2004 Olympian won the 200 breast (2:12.28), 400 IM (4:16.92), 100 breast (1:01.70) and 200 IM (2:02.28). Both breaststrokes were automatic NCAA Qualifying times and rank 5th all-time in Stanford history. Her 400 IM and 100 breaststroke are both the fastest times posted this season. No. 4 Stanford beat USC 230-123, but fell to Texas 197-156.
Ben Hesen, Indiana University
Jeffersonville, Indiana
Freshman Ben Hesen helped IU to a sweep of Texas A&M (137-106) and SMU (154-98). Hesen’s win in the 200 back (1:50.04) was a personal best. Against SMU, he finished 2nd in the 100 back (50.73), led off the winning 200 medley relay, and finished 6th in the 50 free (22.14).
Chris Achey, Ouachita Baptist University
Americus, Georgia
Against archrival Henderson State University, Achey led off the winning 200 medley relay with a backstroke split of 23.78 seconds. Chris won the 50 free (21.15) and 100 butterfly (50.52) in NCAA B Qualifying times. Henderson State edged Ouachita with the help of a 32-point sweep of diving.
Loni Burton, California State University-Bakersfield
San Jose, California
At the University of Pacific Invitational Burton won four events, earning NCAA ‘A’ Cuts in the 50 free (23.89), 100 fly (57.45) and 200 free (1:54.21). Burton just missed an A cut in the 100 free by one one-hundredth of a second with a time of 52.60. Burton anchored three relays that finished in the top two and earned the high point award for the meet.
Chris Pearson, Carnegie Mellon
Columbia, Maryland
The Tartan senior won three events in Carnegie Mellon’s first meet of the year, including the 200 Freestyle (1:40.66) with a NCAA ‘A’ qualifying time, and the 200 butterfly (1:53.66) and 200 backstroke (1:56.08) with NCAA ‘B’ qualifying times. Pearson also swam a leg on the 2nd place 200 Freestyle Relay.
Holly Hinz, Emory University
Marietta, Georgia
The defending NCAA Division III Champion in the 500 freestyle, Hinz swept all three events swum against Division I UNC-Wilmington. Hinz’s wins in the 400 IM (4:33.36), and 200 (1:54.04) and 500 (5:06.37) freestyles automatically qualified he for the NCAA Championships and helped Emory’s earn a 201-99 win over UNC-Wilmington.
