.: UCSD Sweeps Cal State Bakersfield

La Jolla, CA , November 15th, 2004

The UC San Diego men’s and women’s swimming teams came up with huge victories over Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday afternoon in Canyonview Pool. For the first time, the men’s team defeated the defending National Champions 130-107. The win for the Triton women was big in that they took down last year’s fourth-place team, 164-77. The Tritons got NCAA ‘A’ qualifying times from Kurt Boehm (200 free and 200 fly), Sophie Levy (500 free), and the 400 free relay team of Monica Becks, Emily Harlan, Levy, and Rosanna Delurgio.

The men’s team took 6-of-13 events, led by Kurt Boehm’s times in the 200 free (1:40.94) and the 200 fly (1:51.06). The Triton men also finished 1-2-3 in the 1000 free (Devin Spicer, Joel Tourtellotte and Ben Falcioni) and in the 200 breast with Jacob Dong taking first, followed by Brett Going and Derek Pettit. Tourtellotte won the 500 free with a time of 4:41.09 and the 400 medley relay team of Mike Lahey, Going, Boehm and Andy Harutunian took first with a time of 3:25.50.

The women’s team won 9-of-13 events, including finishing 1-2-3 in five of those events (400 medley relay, 1000 free, 200 IM, 200 fly, 200 breast). Sophie Levy finished second in the 500 free, but notched an NCAA time of 5:03.86. The 400 free relay team of Becks, Harlan, Levy, Delurgio took first and an ‘A’ qualifying time of 3:32.61. Susan Bell won the 200 back with a time of 2:09.47 and Harlan took top honors in the 50 free with a time of 24.23.

UC San Diego is back in action on Thursday, November 18 for the Speedo Cup in Long Beach, Calif.
