Meet Results

The No. 23 Indiana women's swimming and diving squad downed the Fighting Illini on Dec. 4 in a 155-145 nail-biter at the IMPE poll in Champaign, Ill. Overall, Indiana claimed 10 out of the 16 event titles, while senior Erin Smith and sophomore Leila Vaziri each captured three crowns.

In the opening event of the meet, IU's 200-yard medley relay quartet of Vaziri, junior Kristen Bradley, Smith and sophomore Annica Lofstedt claimed the event crown in 1:46.96, while Illinois' Mallory Craft, Kathryn Easey, Christina Brunka and Meghan Farrell took second in 1:49.19. The Illini placed third with Carolina Moore, Trisha Lakatos, Michelle Grandcolas and Becca Poetz clocking a 1:51.11. At the end of the event, Indiana led 11-6.

In the 1,000-yard freestyle, the Hoosiers extended their lead to 23-13 as junior Lauren Torpey won the event in 10:10.70. Illinois' Kirsten Koepcke took second in 10:12.72, while junior Lauren Lubus picked up third in a personal-best time of 10:29.49.

In the 200-yard freestyle, Illinois cut IU's gap to 28-27 when Barbie Viney finished in first with a 1:51.38. Junior Doherty Colgin came in second with a 1:52.77, while Amy Downing placed third for Illinois in 1:55.88.

After the 100-yard backstroke, Indiana held a 39-35 lead. Vaziri won her second event with a 58.30, while Illinois' Craft took second in 1:00.83. Additionally, Brunka clocked a 1:01.17 to take third for the Illini.

In the 100-yard breaststroke, Illinois took its first lead, 51-42, with a top three sweep as Lakatos (1:05.10), Easey (1:06.37) and Sam Leibold (1:09.99) held off IU in the event.

In the 200-yard butterfly, the Hoosiers made major headway to close Illinois' lead to 58-54. IU's Smith captured the event in 2:06.72, while Illinois' Jessica Rothenberg placed second in 2:08.35. Meanwhile, freshman Christie Fuchs took third in 2:10.78.

In the 50-yard freestyle, IU re-took a slim 66-65 lead as Lofstedt seized the event crown in 23.86. Illinois's Viney took second in 24.02, while Vaziri finished in third for IU in 24.12.

In the one-meter diving break, Indiana built an 82-68 buffer with a top three sweep of its own. Freshman Christina Loukas won with a 297.85 tally, while junior Lisa Silvestri placed second with a 272.40 and sophomore Lindsay Weigle grabbed third with a 267.15 total. All marks cleared the NCAA zone qualifying standard.

Illinois made a comeback in the 100-yard freestyle to close to within 87-82 when Viney picked up another title in 51.58, while Lofstedt placed second in 52.35. Meanwhile, Downing rounded out the top three with a 53.16 for Illinois.

Indiana stretched its lead to 100-88 in the 200-yard backstroke with the top two finishers as Vaziri notched her third crown in 2:05.71. Sophomore Susanna Ernst placed second for IU in 2:08.53, while Craft took third in 2:08.91 for Illinois.

The Fighting Illini refused to go away quietly as they moved to within one point, 104-103, in the 200-yard breaststroke with a top-two sweep of their own. Lakatos won the event in 2:21.98, while Easey took second in 2:26.39. IU's Bradley placed third in 2:29.04.

The Cream and Crimson jumped back out to a 117-109 lead with an answer in the 500-yard freestyle. Torpey claimed the event title in 4:59.80, while Colgin placed second in 4:59.88. Meanwhile, Koepcke took third in 5:00.33.

Indiana remained in the lead, 127-118, in the 100-yard butterfly when Smith captured the crown with a 57.46. Illinois' Brunka (57.78) and Grandcolas (59.54) took second and third, respectively.

IU diving provided the Hoosiers with another large buffer, 143-121, with another top-three sweep. Loukas won the three-meter title with a 292.20 tally, while Weigle took second with a 291.85. Additionally, Silvestri finished in third with a 273.35 total.

In the 400-yard IM, IU maintained a 151-132 margin even though Rothenberg brought home the title for Illinois in 4:32.61. Lubus placed second in 4:34.75, while Ernst took third in 4:38.02.

The Hoosiers iced a 155-145 victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a second-place finish (3:30.14) by sophomore Clarissa Wentworth, Lofstedt, Colgin and Smith. Illinois' Downing, Farrell, Brunka and Viney claimed the title in 3:29.73.
