The Hamilton College women’s swimming and diving team and the Rensselaer men’s team won team titles in the Tenth Annual Liberty League Championships that concluded on Saturday and were held at Hamilton College’s Bristol Pool.
The Hamilton women finished with 759.5 points to edge the runners-up from the University of Rochester by 13.5 points. Hamilton has won seven straight women’s league titles and nine overall. The Rensselaer men were in second place behind Hamilton after the Saturday morning session, but knocked the Continentals out of the top spot in the afternoon by finishing with 845 points for the two-day event. Hamilton, which had won six straight league men’s titles, finished second with 790 points. The Red Hawks also won the league championship in 1996.
Union College’s DJ Hogenkamp ’06 was named the Male Swimmer of the Meet. Hogenkamp received the same honor in 2003 and was a Rookie of the Meet in 2002. He won the 100-yard butterfly and the 200 backstroke, and set a meet record in the 100 back. Hamilton’s Suzie Wilson ’06 was the Female Swimmer of the Meet. Wilson was Rookie of the Meet in 2002. She set meet records in the 100 and 200 back, won the 200 individual medley, and was part of three winning relays.
Rensselaer’s Matt Hiltner ’08 and Rochester’s Danielle Scherry ’08 were selected the Male and Female Rookies of the Meet. Scherry won the 500 and the 1,650 freestyle while Hiltner was second in the 200 IM. Hamilton’s Mike Salmon ’06 and Union’s Sarah Steuer ’05 earned Divers of the Meet awards. Both Salmon and Steuer won the two diving events. Rensselaer head coach Shannon O’Brien, assistant Daniel Traub and diving coach Maria Coomaraswamy-Falkenstein received the Coaching Staff of the Meet award.
