.: Arizona's Simon Burnett shattered the 17-year old U.S. Open Record

Austin, TX , December 3rd, 2004

Arizona's Simon Burnett - 2003 NCAA Champion in the 200 freestyle (1:33.69) - has shattered the 17-year old U.S. Open Record held by Matt Biondi (1:33.03 - April 3, 1987), touching in 1:32.22. Below are his splits as well as a comment from Burnett and Head Coach Frank Bush.

Lane 4, Heat 3 50 yards - 21.29 100 yards - 23.40 150 yards - 23.79 200 yard - 23.74 - 1:32.22

Head Coach Frank Busch: "To beat a record that has been on the books since 1987 is pretty impressive. To be honest, I was shocked. I knew he was going to swim fast, but not nearly as fast as he did. Simon is a great kid and I am happy for him."

Simon Burnett: "Obviously, I am on top of the moon right now. I knew I was fast - I had swam an amazing 50 freestyle yesterday (19.28), which was my best time by far. But, hey, it was one of the oldest records in the books and it's about time it gets written off. Coach Bucsh has worked us very hard and I knew I was in great shape coming into this meet."
