.: Notre Dame Invitational - Day One

South Bend, IN , December 2nd, 2004

Meet Results

The University of Notre Dame men's swimming and diving team dominated the first day of competition at the 2004 Notre Dame Invitational on Thursday evening, winning four of the five events competed in the pool. The evening was highlighted by sophomore Tim Kegelman, who set a pool record in the 200 IM by finishing first in 1:49.48 (also a NCAA `B' cut time). It wasn't all Irish though as four Truman women earned 'A' cuts while Denison's Sarah Peck and Lowell Byers each put up Division III's fastest 50 freestyles this season

The 200 freestyle relay started the evening off in strong fashion, just missing the meet record to finish first in 1:21.85. The team of junior Tim Randolph, senior Frank Krakowski, sophomore Louis Cavadini and Kegelman were just off the meet record of 1:21.48, set by Oakland in 2001.

Notre Dame also dominated the 500 freestyle, placing five swimmers in the top eight. Sophomore Ted Brown finished first with a season-best time of 4:28.65, followed by freshman Jay Vanden Berg in second place (4:31.98 - a personal best by almost six seconds), sophomore Chris Zeches in fourth (4:34.46, a season best), junior Patrick Davis (4:34.71, a season best) and senior Matt Bertke (4:40.25). Notre Dame place three swimmers in the top eight of the 50 freestyle.

The Irish capped the meet with a strong swim in the 400 medley relay, as the team of junior Doug Bauman, Randolph, Kegelman and Krakowski touched first in 3:20.98 - the best time for the team this season by seven seconds.

The Irish women's team was represented by just divers on Thursday, but senior Meghan Perry-Eaton picked up a victory for Notre Dame, taking the one-meter diving competition with 297.35 points.
