Westminster Sweeps Bethany

The Westminster College men's and women's swimming teams each posted dual meet wins over Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Bethany College tonight at the Westminster Natatorium. The Titan men (5-0, 2-0 PAC) remained unbeaten with a 117-67 victory over the Bison, while the Lady Titans (3-2, 1-1 PAC) recorded a 115-74 win over Bethany.

For the Titan men, sophomore Ryan Trunk (Brookline, MA/Cheshire Academy H.S.) (photo attached) led the way with first place finishes in the 100 (48.47) and 200 freestyle (1:48.68). Other double winners included junior Josh Hensler (Pittsburgh/South Park H.S.), sophomores Pat Smith (South Park/South Park H.S.) and Shaun McNamara (North Huntingdon/Norwin H.S.) and freshman Tom Benoit (Pittsburgh/Shaler H.S.), all of whom swam on the winning 200 freestyle relay team (1:31.45) while posting other wins as well. Hensler won the 50 freestyle (23.44) and Smith the 500 freestyle (5:12.36), while McNamara and Benoit also swam on the victorious 200 medley relay team (1:42.79).

Seven different Westminster women captured individual events against the Bison. The Lady Titans were led by freshman Becky Giles (Johnstown/Westmont Hilltop H.S.) (photo attached), who won the 100 backstroke (1:03.03) while swimming a leg on the winning 200 medley relay team (1:58.30). Sophomores Sara Bonchosky (Uniontown/Laurel Highlands H.S.), Brittany Thomas (Bethel Park/Bethel Park H.S.) and Amanda Lawton (Franklin/Franklin H.S.) all swam on the victorious 200 freestyle relay team (1:46.46) while adding individual wins. Bonchosky touched first in the 100 butterfly (1:02.89), Thomas in the 100 breaststroke (1:17.36) and Lawton in the 500 freestyle (5:41.68).

Westminster swimming returns to dual meet competition tomorrow (Saturday, Dec. 11), as the Titans and Lady Titans host NCAA Division II Slippery Rock at the Natatorium beginning at 1 p.m.
