1st: it shows the rest of team, in particular the seniors, that you have no confidence in them. I'm all for being realistic, but sometimes you've got to go with what you've got. I wonder what the rest of the seniors think about this move.
2nd: it shows the IU athletic department as well as the IU administration that the coach values the 5th year of school -- which is not payed for my the athletic department -- it's payed for by the school. I know most student-athletes take a fifth year, but if it's the norm (and it's public) -- they are going to lose some recruits. Kids may go along with it, but parents may not.
All you "alpha dogs" are sniffing around the same fire hydrant. You all assume, first of all, that 4 IU swimmers are being redshirted this year. Maybe true, maybe not. We know they have not swum in the first couple of meets. But if you look at the IU roster the only redshirt listed is freshman Austin Steel. None of the four guys mentioned in the rumors is listed as being redshirted this year. Second, you are assuming that the only reason a coach will redshirt a swimmer is to benefit the coaches future to the detriment of the team and the individual. There are many reasons why coaches redshirt athletes; grades, injuries, maturity, conditioning, athletes pointing to olympic trials, and I am sure that there are indeed cases where a coach wants to make next year's team stronger.
My point is that there is a lot of bashing going on based on rumors and innuendos and THAT is what is irresponsible.
