1st: it shows the rest of team, in particular the seniors, that you have no confidence in them. I'm all for being realistic, but sometimes you've got to go with what you've got. I wonder what the rest of the seniors think about this move.

2nd: it shows the IU athletic department as well as the IU administration that the coach values the 5th year of school -- which is not payed for my the athletic department -- it's payed for by the school. I know most student-athletes take a fifth year, but if it's the norm (and it's public) -- they are going to lose some recruits. Kids may go along with it, but parents may not.

All you "alpha dogs" are sniffing around the same fire hydrant. You all assume, first of all, that 4 IU swimmers are being redshirted this year. Maybe true, maybe not. We know they have not swum in the first couple of meets. But if you look at the IU roster the only redshirt listed is freshman Austin Steel. None of the four guys mentioned in the rumors is listed as being redshirted this year. Second, you are assuming that the only reason a coach will redshirt a swimmer is to benefit the coaches future to the detriment of the team and the individual. There are many reasons why coaches redshirt athletes; grades, injuries, maturity, conditioning, athletes pointing to olympic trials, and I am sure that there are indeed cases where a coach wants to make next year's team stronger.
My point is that there is a lot of bashing going on based on rumors and innuendos and THAT is what is irresponsible.

And now on the lighter side. I assume Big 10 swimming includes the women's programs too. Who is strong this year and what are the NCAA prospects for the various teams?

I did say that the redshirting idea may be a rumor. And if it IS a rumor, then who cares, this is a message board. But the fact remains, Cody Weik and Eric Ress have not swum this year. Is it or is it not a redshirt? Who cares. For whatever reason, even though they are on the roster, they have not yet competed this year. Because these two are two of IU's best swimmers, it is news....at least for a message board.

Message boards are for discussion. Should we discuss how pretty the flowers look today instead?

It is not a rumor, it is fact that Ress, Weik, Barberie and Cordes are redshirting this year. Looze said so himself - http://iuhoosiers.cstv.com/sports/m-swi ... 09aaa.html.

He is correct, there are many reasons to redshirt. Two of the guys are medical redshirting, which you have to apply for and would not know until probably next year if it was approved. Cordes has switched schools twice so he has to sit out a year. And the fourth is so he can mature and grow as a swimmer. It is in the best interest of all four swimmers that they not compete this year.

Is the Cordes redshirting at IU the same Cordes who swam both at U. Maryland AND Cal last year? If so, how can he be eligible, ever to swim at a thrid school? Just asking.

First transfer is a freebie under the one-time transfer exemption. Second transfer - well, you're gonna sit.

As for the 5th year - if you're competing, you're counting - otherwise it would make NO sense not to redshirt nearly every make freshman on your team. A) they're not going to finish in four years anyhow; b) you'll give them a year to mature and catch up with the 22-year old freshman from Ukranistan or Brazilagura or some other country you've never heard of.

That's a no brainer. It's like Univ of Texas football versus Austin Junior High School.

It may be that Minnesota has more depth than Iowa, but Iowa posted some impressive times. They crushed MN in 200 free, 100 fly, and 400 free relay. Gordon went nuts at this meet.

Purdue's Invite is next weekend. Who all is attending? And is that Purdue's mid-taper meet?
